Native Gardening at the Recreation Center
Making the playground and landscaping more welcoming, child-friendly, and supportive of native wildlife.
GGCA is partnering with native plant professionals, Office of Public Works, and Recreation Center managers to transform the recreation center’s 10-year old landscaping from one with a few plant varieties into a more diverse, colorful, and resilient environment. Here’s our plan:
- Phase I (Summer): Identify the many old plants and trees that are dead or no longer thriving and develop a plan to replace them, featuring a wide variety of native plants and much-needed, larger shade trees around the playground.
- Phase II (Early Fall): Remove old plants with the help of the Public Works Youth Employment Partnership (YEP), a paid program that helps young adults build employability and leadership skills while cleaning and greening the City.
- Phase III (Late Fall and beyond): Install the new plantings and establish a volunteer maintenance program to help establish the new landscape.
